I have a sort-of non-standard way of moderating:
If a thread becomes nasty, no matter what area it is initially posted in, nasty to where people are really ranking on each other, the thread should be moved to Deep Cleansing, and don't have it leave a message in the old area saying it has been moved. This is primarily because I want to be sure that the number of posts that are listed remain the REAL number of posts (when a thread is moved and a post gets left [from not unchecking the box] saying that it was moved, the board counts that as a post)--this also ensures that searches work efficiently. When a search is performed, it does NOT count those posts--so if you were to click "50 most recent thread headers", and 2 of those results are just an automatic post saying something has been moved, the search will only pull up 48 results. I just want to keep the results consistent with what people expect.
If only one person is getting nasty, and everyone else is being reasonable, a warning should be given. After 2 warnings, the thread gets moved to Deep Cleansing--this is of course if it isn't a bunch of anti-gay slurs or racist slurs or racist tirades--read further on how to handle those.
If racist and/or anti-gay slurs that are not related to the thread at hand (and are not in the Deep Cleansing area) are used directly--where it's not talking about others who are using those terms, it's actually using those terms to degrade people--and it's not a joke about racism, and it's not a story about racism--it's using those words in a way to degrade someone, especially someone directly on the forum), those posts should be quoted IN THEIR ENTIRETY and reposted in "Mean-spirited awful things people say:" in the Deep Cleansing area, and then the original post in the original thread edited to ONLY say, "this post has been moved to the "mean-spirited" area".
If the post is a brand new post talking specifically about that subject, and it is already in the Deep Cleansing area, and you feel it's truly awful, please send me a PM and I'll see if there's anything I can do. Whether I pm the individual or post about it in the forum, I won't mention that it's you that made me enquire about something unless specifically tell me to.
If you're worried about looking like a tattletale or something, I can create special accounts that I give to each moderator to use when posting those quotes--they could have names like "moderator 1" "moderator 2", that sort of thing--that is, if you're worried about that.
If the really mean-spirited people become a problem (which makes it more of a when than an if, but I'm trying to be positive), I will have to instate the karma function of ProBoards, which basically gives posters ratings that are seen under each person's name and avatar in every post. Right now the option is set for off. If that proves ineffective for some truly nasty posters still, I will have to slightly cripple those people's accounts until they can prove to be civil. Those last parts are not something I expect the moderators to worry about. They shouldn't HAVE to worry about making those kinds of decisions. They can if they wish, but I really don't want them to have to worry about that. This shouldn't be a stressful thing for people. If anyone is to be stressed, it should be me.
Now--there are some things that I want deleted immediately: Any posts that threaten real harm to people, whether those people are other posters, politicians, or anyone REAL. Not only do I NOT find those things acceptable, but I am not willing to have this forum shut down because some people wanted to be stupid. If you are able to, if you can think to do it right before you quickly remove that kind of post, please quote their post and send me a PM. With something like that, banning the person posting that kind of trash is not out of the question in any way. Even if you can't quote the message and just had a chance to remove it, please report to me if you have had to do this to someone's post and who it was.
EDIT: Oh yeah--then there's moving spam to the spam folder.
This may be a big order, and if it is, let me know and I can cut it down, or even section off different people to handle different apsects to the moderating if it would make it easier for everyone. As I've said before, I want this forum to be something that everyone can enjoy.
